The Crucial Call: Being Ready for the Return of Jesus

The Bible is rife with teachings that encourage readiness and vigilance, particularly when it comes to the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In Luke 12:47-49, Jesus provides a stark reminder not only of the need to be ready but also of the role we are called to play—setting the world ablaze with His message.

Let's explore this passage and understand why being prepared for the return of Jesus means more than just waiting. It means actively engaging in His mission, igniting a spiritual fire that transforms lives.

Luke 12:47-49 (NIV):

"The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!"

Being Ready to Receive

The first element of readiness involves a keen awareness of the Master's will. This is more than a passive acknowledgment; it requires a concerted effort to align our hearts and actions with God's desires. Knowing the will of the Master necessitates an intimate relationship with Him, cultivated through prayer, study of His Word, and a life of obedience.

Being ready means living each day with an eternal perspective. Are our lives reflective of His teachings? Are we prepared to meet Him at any moment? This kind of readiness fosters a deep sense of spiritual alertness and moral responsibility.

Being Used to Ignite Fire

However, Jesus' message in Luke 12:49 introduces a dynamic shift—from merely being prepared to actively participating in His mission. When Jesus says, "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled," He speaks of a transformative, purifying force that He desires to see spread.

This fire represents several things: the presence of the Holy Spirit, the fervent proclamation of the Gospel, and a zeal for justice and righteousness. Jesus calls us not simply to wait in readiness but to be catalysts for His Kingdom.

How Can We Ignite This Fire?

1. Share the Gospel: Be vocal about your faith. Let your life be a testament to the transformative power of Jesus.

2. Live Authentically: Authenticity in our Christian walk strengthens our witness and kindles a genuine interest in others.

3. Engage in Acts of Love and Justice: Be the hands and feet of Jesus in a world that desperately needs His touch.

4. Cultivate Community: Foster a sense of belonging and support within your church and community, encouraging others to live out their faith passionately.

5. Disciple Others: Equip and mentor others to understand their role in this grand mission.

A Great Responsibility

Jesus' parable in Luke emphasizes a significant truth: to whom much is given, much is required. Our knowledge, resources, and spiritual gifts are not just for our benefit but are intended to further His Kingdom. If we are abundantly blessed, then we are also abundantly accountable.

Conclusion

Being ready for the return of Jesus encompasses preparation, vigilance, and active engagement in His mission. It's a fiery call to move beyond passive anticipation to fully embrace our role as bearers of His light and truth.

As we await His return, let's strive to be more than just prepared receivers. Let us be igniters of the fire Jesus wishes to see on this earth, spreading His love, justice, and the transformative power of the Gospel in all that we do.
